18,500 releatives

I have been interested in genealogy for about 10 years now. In that time, I have researched, documented, and linked about 18,500 relatives. More importantly, I have identified 90 percent of my 7th generation ancestors.

Considering that every generation doubles your number of ancestors, knowing all of your 7th generation ancestors and their direct line of descendants adds up to a lot of people.

  • 1 me
  • 2 parents (3 total)
  • 4 grand parents (7 total)
  • 8 great grand parents (15 total)
  • 16 great great grand parents (31 total)
  • 32 great great great grand parents (63 total)
  • 64 great great great great grand parents (127 total)

As of today, I know all of these ancestors with the exception of four on my dad’s side and three on my mom’s side. The numbers begin to get a lot larger when you start identifying your ancestors’ descendants (e.g. your cousins).

In a selfish attempt to potentially connect with other genealogist researching the same ancestors I am, I’d like to briefly highlight four pairs of g-g-g-g-grand-parents, all from North Carolina, that interest me the most.

  1. Hey Jason,

Ten years seems like a long time, but as a person that has always been interested, but not know where to start. Seems like you have some pretty awesome experience on starting and continuing the search for relatives. Any chance you could expound in a new post what it takes to produce such data?
